What is the purpose of the library consortium? ›

A library consortium is a cooperative organization of libraries created for the purpose of sharing resources and reciprocity, and restricted by commonly recognized agreements and contracts.

The consortium is formed by types of its member institutions, such as UGC- INFONET Digital Library Consortium is a consortium for University Libraries. Likewise INDEST–AICTE Consortium is a Consortium for Technical Institutions.

NYU students and faculty have access and borrowing privileges at a number of affiliated and consortium libraries, including The New School, Cooper Union and New York School of Interior Design.

Throughout the history of libraries cooperation has been recognized as an important element in their development because it was a means by which libraries could meet the needs and demands of their users when the resources of individual libraries were inadequate.
